Isn't it interesting how employees tend to work extra hard right around review time? About the same time managers have no shortage of extra assignments to pass out because they know the employees will be willing to take on the work in hope of impacting their performance rating right before the review? The review process can turn into a popularity contest where the reviewer decides the score first and then writes a justification to back it up.

Performance reviews should have NO surprises. Someone should know where they stand as a result of regular coaching sessions throughout the year.
